Answers to the Most Frequently Asked Questions

Scholarships

How do I apply for the scholarship? Is there a separate scholarship application?
There is no separate application for the Erasmus Mundus scholarship. All applicants who are accepted to the EMSEP programme will automatically be considered for the scholarship on a competitive basis.

How many scholarships are available?
There are eighteen scholarships available in the programme. In addition, the European Commission offers a separate quota of 1 scholarship for students from the Western Balkan countries (i.e. Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo under UNSC Resolution 1244/99, FYRoM, Montenegro, Serbia) and Turkey if there are qualified applicants from these countries.

Are there restrictions about who can receive the Erasmus Mundus scholarships?
According to the European Commission rules, no more than 2 of the students selected for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship should have the same nationality. This means that the scholarships will also be allocated on the basis of nationality.

If I am accepted to the EMSEP programme but am not awarded a scholarship can I still attend?
Selected students not receiving Erasmus Mundus or EMSEP consortium scholarships can join the programme with their own funding. The EMSEP programme has tuition fees as follows: € 7,500 per year for non-EU/EFTA students (third-country students, Category A); € 3,500 per year for EU/EFTA students (Category B). The tuition fee includes health insurance coverage.

Graduation only after application deadline

I will receive my degree certificate after the application deadline during spring/summer. Can I still apply to the programme?
You may certainly still apply for the programme. Simply send your application package including everything but the degree certificate and include either a temporary degree certificate or an official letter from your institution of higher education stating your expected graduation time. If your application is successful you will be granted a provisional acceptance to the programme, pending the receipt of the missing document.

Language competence

Can I send a copy of my language test score myself or does it have to be sent directly from TOEFL/IELTS?
For TOEFL, the test report form must be sent directly from the ETS testing centre that organises TOEFL tests. Test score reports sent by the applicant are not accepted.

For IELTS, CAE and CPE, please ask the testing centre to send your test report form to University Admissions Finland; however, you may also send the original report yourself, along with your application package.

The TOEFL code number of the University Admissions Finland is 3138. By quoting this number in your TOEFL test form you ensure that your score is automatically sent to us.

If you intend to take the IELTS test, please address the test results in section 24 (Institution Applications) to University Admissions Finland.

If you have previously completed the language test, you may ask the testing centre to send an official test report form to University Admissions Finland. Copies of the language test report form can also be accepted but only for IELTS, CAE and CPE.

I completed my previous studies in English; do I still need to take the language test?
In order to be considered exempt from taking the language test you must have completed your previous education (bachelor’s or master’s degree, high school or upper secondary school) fully in English in Great Britain, Ireland, the USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand.

I have lived in an English speaking country for a number of years and have good English language skills. Do I still need to take the language test?

Sending application & supporting documents

Should I send originals or copies of my degree certificate, transcript of records and work certificates?
You should send officially certified copies of these documents. If your application is successful you will then be asked to show the original documents at the Faculty Office upon commencing your studies. Officially certified copies mean that the copies are certified by a Notary, Embassy or other public body.

If my application will not arrive by post until after the application deadline, can I send the application by fax so that is in time for the deadline?
Only signed applications sent by postal mail and received at the latest by the deadline will be considered in the application process. Do not send any document via email! For this reason, please make sure that you send your application well in advance. You may also use a courier service to ensure your application arrives on time. In that case, please also mark down the visiting address and the phone number of the University Admissions Finland, see Contact information.

What if my supporting documents are not in English?
The supporting documentation can be either in English or in Finnish. If any of your supporting documents are not in English or Finnish, then an officially certified translation must be sent, along with a certified copy of the original document. The translation must be done by an authorized translator. The application form and the reference form must, in any case, be completed in English.
